Get your digital hands dirty while getting to know Adobe Illustrator in this experimental, process-focused workshop. We’ll go over a handful of tools both foundational and esoteric while making beautiful vector-based digital canvases. No previous experience with Illustrator is required, and attendees can choose to print their creations on-site in the Digital Design Studio at the end of the workshop.

InDesign is a poweful layout software for making reports and other publications look engaging and readble, from printed booklets to folded mailers. Nonprofits, government jobs, and even private corporations regularly produce reports to communicate information, stories, and data with stakeholders – and they don't always hire a designer, so some InDesign knowledge might go a long way. We'll go over some of the basics of InDesign, take a look at some example reports, and talk about design choices.

An introduction to the many considerations in sharing your academic work, with the goal of making your research and scholarship widely available. Learn about how to choose a journal to publish in; open access options; the importance of copyright; how to evaluate a publisher's contract; and how to protect and exercise your rights to use, share, and distribute your work.

An interactive session on elements and principles of poster design. We'll be looking at different formats and the reasons you might chose one or the other, from the standard paper-on-a-page to emerging formats including visual abstracts that focus on networking or quickly spreading ideas. This session will focus on design strategies for scientific conference posters, but these strategies are applicable for other disciplines as well.

You don't need a video camera to make a film. The internet provides access to numerous databases and archives full of media available for download and manipulation. In this workshop we will cover where to find openly licensed media available for download and then edit them together in Adobe Premiere to transform the content into something new. During the workshop, we'll use examples centered around storytelling with pre-existing media of Winnie the Pooh. No prior editing experience required.

Zotero is a powerful, open-source tool for managing citations and PDFs. Many researchers in all domains (humanities, social sciences, natural sciences) rely on Zotero as a core part of their scholarly workflows. During the first hour of this workshop, we'll practice key Zotero functions together: importing and creating new references; managing references; inserting citations into a manuscript; and formatting bibliographies in hundreds of styles based on your discipline or publisher. Following hands-on practice, we'll offer a 30-minute question-and-answer session.
