Study spaces and noise zones at Tisch

Looking for a space to chat with your group? Or a practically silent table to get work done? Tisch Library gets quieter the deeper you go. Study carrels, study tables, and computer tables are located throughout Tisch Library. The 2nd and 3rd floors are mainly collaborate spaces, with the exception of the Hirsh Reading Room (floor 2, room 225) as a designated space for silent study. The 1st floor is quiet study, and level G is silent study.

How do we define collaborate, quiet, and silent?

  • Collaborate Zone: active conversation and group work, expectation of interaction and activity while being mindful of others
  • Whisper Zone: hushed voices and whispers only, expectation of small groups working mostly independently with minimal sustained interactions
  • Silent Zone: minimal to no speaking, general expectation of unavoidable background noises (HVAC systems, chairs moving, typing sounds, coughing, etc.)

Study rooms are located on the 1st and 2nd floors, and are all collaborate spaces, but please note: these rooms are not all sound-proofed! Please keep your location in mind and be considerate of others and the space you occupy when using them!

Reserve a study room

There are group study rooms on the 1st and 2nd floors of Tisch Library. Study rooms can be reserved through Reserve Tufts. For more information, see our page on reserving a room.

Late night study

After the main desk closes, Tisch is open for late night study hours. Library services are not available during these hours, but security staff are present in the building and self-checkout is available. A current Tufts ID is required to enter the building.
