National Handwriting Day with Special Collections

Join Special Collections for a celebration of National Handwriting Day, the anniversary of John Hancock's birth, next Monday, January 23rd. We will have manuscripts and early printed books on display, as well as a place for you to sit down and try your hand at writing with a quill or fountain pen, or transcribing medieval and early modern texts. A flyer is attached. (Don't worry- the handwriting samples won't all be that difficult to read!)

Ars et Scientia: Woodblock Printing with Michael Smoot

Join Special Collections and SMFA Professor Michael Smoot for a hands-on event on November 2nd from 2:00-4:00 PM in Tisch Library Room 103. With the help of Professor Smoot and his portable printing press, you will be able to make your own prints of the beautiful woodblock illustrations showcased in our upcoming exhibit, Ars et Scientia: The Intersection of Science and Art in Early Modern Woodcuts, on display in Special Collections from October 25th through the end of the semester.

The Hereford Mappa Mundi: A Medieval Worldview

The Hereford Mappa Mundi (c. 1300) is a richly illustrated and beguiling work of cartography that attempted to situate the entirety of the known world geographically, temporally, and spiritually. Elettra Conoly (A’21) will give a lightning talk on the Hereford map, highlighting some of its most fascinating and perplexing elements. A facsimile of the Hereford map will be on display, as well as examples of student research and collaboration with Special Collections.

Join us on Saturday, October 22nd at 1:00 p.m. in Tisch Library Room 103!

Special Collections Opening Ceremony

Please join us in welcoming Special Collections into their new space. The Opening Ceremony will take place on Thursday, September 29th from 3:00-4:00 PM in Tisch Library Room 103.
