Introduction to the Digital Humanities

Digital humanities brings together scholarship that uses computational methods for the study of traditional humanities disciplines, traditional humanities inquiry for the study of computation, and the use of digital publishing practices for rich, multi-modal storytelling. Digital humanities thus encompasses a wide range of topics and methods including: augmented reality and virtual reality; cultural analytics, text analysis, and AI; mapping and GIS; network analysis; digital archives and exhibits, digital storytelling, publicly engaged scholarship, digital editions, and more.

Tisch Library Graduate Fellows in Arts and Humanities 2024 Panel

Join us to hear the presentations of the 2024 Tisch Library Graduate Research Fellows in the Arts and Humanities, whose thesis and dissertation research projects make creative use of collections, services, and expertise at Tufts libraries. Our 2024 fellows are:

Anahit Gasparyan, MA candidate in Art History. Anahit's research examines the connections between the medieval Etchmiadzin Gospel, the Church of Bgheno-Noravankʻ, located in the Syunikʻ province of Armenia, and the larger countryside of the region.

Illustrator Improv

Join us for snacks and a relaxing, playful exploration of Adobe Illustrator. Illustrator is a vector-based 2D design program used for graphic design, typesetting, and (unsurprisingly) illustration, but it’s not a typical “drawing” program like you might be familiar with if you’ve used Photoshop or ProCreate. This event will help you understand how to start developing a visual language by experimenting with shape, color, and scale with a focus on exploration and process more than product. There is no previous experience with Illustrator required.

Now on display: Overlooked: Gender and Portraiture at Tufts

Posted: Wed, Aug 21st 2024

Institutional portraits on display in buildings across Tufts' Medford/Somerville campus have historically served to celebrate the achievements of the people portrayed and to promote the collective ideals and values of the university. What is not seen are the myriad decisions made long before a portrait is hung on the wall: Who will be commemorated? Will it be donated, purchased or commissioned? How much will it cost, and who will provide the funding? Where will the portrait be displayed and for what reasons might it eventually be removed from view?
