Digital Scholarship & Digital Design
Digital Scholarship at Tisch Library supports Tufts faculty, staff, and students through expertise, services, and teaching in digital humanities, digital scholarship, visual design, creative media, project development, and open scholarship. We collaborate with partners across the university, including the Digital Design Studio, Researcher Services, Digital Initiatives, Data Lab, Tufts Archival Research Center, and Research Technology Services, to foster sustainable, innovative, and accessible research initiatives.
Rare Books & Special Collections
Engage with unique primary source materials that illuminate book cultures from the medieval world to the present. Collections in the Tisch, SMFA, and Lilly Music libraries include rare books, manuscripts, archives, artists' books, and historical music materials that support teaching, learning, and original research across disciplines.

Research Data Management
Data De-Identification and Re-Identification (60 mins)
Students will learn about data privacy and de-identification by working to re-identify data in a (fake) dataset. This lesson can be adapted to center human subjects research concepts (confidentiality, de-identification methods like redaction, bucketing, pseudonymity), or to center personal privacy issues (real world examples of re-identification, data brokerage).
Data Sharing & FAIR Data (30-60 mins)
Openly sharing data increases research impact and is becoming a requirement of many major research funders. In this lesson, students will learn best practices for sharing data, with a focus on making data FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reproducible) and on finding appropriate, discipline-specific repositories to share original datasets in.
File Management Basics (20-30 mins)
Students will learn best practices for managing digital files, including file naming, folder organization, and safe storage and backup methods.
Open Data Ecosystems (60 mins)
Students will discover the foundations of open data in their discipline. Students will explore a range of questions around open data, including: Why is open data important, and what does the open data landscape look like in my field? What are the challenges of creating and sustaining an open data ecosystem? How can I utilize open data?
Responsible Data Stewardship (30-60 mins)
In this lesson, students will learn the basics of file management, safe data practices, and effective documentation for collaborative projects, with an emphasis on our collective responsibility to protect and safeguard institutional data. Students will understand the foundations of collaborative data management practices and articulate their role as data and information stewards on campus. Depending on discipline, this lesson can be modified to include a discussion of human subject data stewardship, FERPA or HIPAA information policies, or the CARE principles for Indigenous Data Governance.
Understanding Metadata (45 mins)
Students will analyze a README file or codebook from a real dataset in their discipline, identify key metadata components, and practice populating a README file or codebook. This lesson acts as an introduction to real-life metadata for students utilizing existing data for research, and/or for students collecting or creating datasets.
Scholarly Communication
The Tufts Libraries Scholarly Communication program helps faculty, students, and researchers navigate copyright, scholarly publishing, open access, research dissemination, and compliance requirements. Through consultations, educational programs, and publishing support, participants learn how to protect and manage their intellectual property, make informed publishing decisions, meet funder mandates, increase the visibility and impact of their scholarship, and take advantage of open access publishing opportunities and journal hosting services.
