A Guide to Music Resources for Diversity, Equity, and Antiracism
The aim of this research guide is to amplify the repertoire, music, and scholarship about and by Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC). This guide is a starting point for faculty and instructors who want to
- decenter their pedagogical practices, performances, concert programming, or research
- identify resources for bringing diversity, equity, and inclusion into teaching, performance, and research
- learn more about musical traditions of underrepresented people and groups
- locate repertoire beyond the Western European music canon
Students may find this guide useful for identifying repertoire beyond the traditional canon and learning about music and musical traditions of BIPOC.
Diversity and representation in our score collection
In FY21, we added 300+ scores to the Lilly Music Library collection, a significant number of these are by women and BIPOC composers. Learn more about our efforts and explore the scores and composers added through this resource, which features an interactive visualization and timeline.
You can also access links and a full list of scores and composers in this spreadsheet.
Access to and visibility of underrepresented composers
With library student employees we are developing an open-access music data and incipit resource that aims to make works by un(der)-represented people more discoverable, decenter the musical canon, and make data-driven music scholarship more diverse and inclusive.
You can view more information about this work on the project homepage or visit the incipit index directly.
