Based on student request and how students use study spaces already, Tisch Library is piloting noise zoning this fall semester. The 2nd and 3rd floors in Tisch are collaborative spaces for group work and activity (minus the Hirsh Reading Room, which will remain a silent reading room), the 1st floor is a whisper floor, and the G level is a silent floor.
How do we define our noise zones at Tisch?
- Collaborate Zone: active conversation and group work, expectation of interaction and activity while being mindful of others
- Whisper Zone: hushed voices and whispers only, expectation of small groups working mostly independently with minimal sustained interactions
- Silent Zone: minimal to no speaking, general expectation of unavoidable background noises (HVAC systems, chairs moving, typing sounds, coughing, etc.)
