2021-2022 OER Awards details, examples, and resources

Tisch Library OER Awards are available at three different funding levels, based on the amount of anticipated time involved and the impact of the project.

This page provides details, examples, and resources for projects eligible for each of the award tiers.

Examples & details

These may include, but are not limited to: lecture video collections, online lab activities, problem sets, assignments & assessments, etc. Other educational materials will also be considered.

Multimedia materials should come with transcripts or captions as applicable.

Materials should fill a gap in existing open resources and be of potential value to instructors, students, or others beyond the course they are created for.

Materials created as part of this grant will be submitted to Tisch Library to be deposited in the open access Tufts Digital Library under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) license. Material is deposited in the Tufts Digital Library under the terms of a non-exclusive deposit license 

Material may also be shared elsewhere on Tufts websites, such as the Tisch Library website.

Examples & details

Applicants may:  

1. Replace a core text for your course with an open textbook. -or- 

2. Create a course reader/compilation from a variety of open sources. You may supplement with library-licensed materials that are no-cost to students. Priority will be given to projects that incorporate a high percentage of fully open resources. 

We encourage applicants to look for opportunities to diversify course readings as you adopt open course materials.

Find OER

Applicants agree

To provide to Tisch Library a statement identifying how they adopted/adapted OER content in the context of their syllabus, with examples from the syllabus. You may optionally also share your full, revised, syllabus. 

The statement will be deposited in the open access Tufts Digital Library. Material is deposited in the Tufts Digital Library under the terms of a non-exclusive deposit license. The full syllabus will only be deposited with your permission. 

Material may also be shared elsewhere on Tufts websites, such as the Tisch Library website.

Examples & details

Applicants may: 

1. Create a full syllabus for a course that uses open or low-cost course materials.  -or- 

2. Adopt or adapt an open syllabus created by another instructor, resulting in a zero or low-cost course for your students. 

You may supplement readings with library-licensed materials that are no-cost to students. Priority will be given to projects that incorporate a high percentage of fully open resources. 

We encourage applicants to look for opportunities to diversify course readings as you create or adapt your open syllabus.  

Total cost of course materials for students must be less than $30.

Examples & details

Create an assignment, assessment, or project where students develop or adapt open educational resources. 

This might include, but isn’t limited to: Wikipedia editing projects, revising or contributing to open textscreating supplemental materials for other open course materials, or creating a collaborative assignment where students identify open resources to incorporate into the course syllabus.

Open Pedagogy Notebook

Applicants agree

To provide to Tisch Library a statement describing the project, goals, and outcomes, on the model of posts in the Open Pedagogy Notebook (example).  

The statement will be deposited in the open access Tufts Digital Library under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) license. Material is deposited in the Tufts Digital Library under the terms of a non-exclusive deposit license.  

 Material may also be shared elsewhere on Tufts websites, such as the Tisch Library website.

Examples & details

Applicants will create a full course using open or low-cost course materials. This will include all components of a course such that another instructor could fully adapt the course using your materials. 

You may supplement readings with library-licensed materials that are no-cost to students. Priority will be given to projects that incorporate a high percentage of fully open resources. 

We encourage applicants to look for opportunities to diversify course readings as you create your course.  

Total cost of course materials for students must be less than $30.

To submit course components to Tisch Library. 

The material will be deposited in the open access Tufts Digital Library under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) license. Material is deposited in the Tufts Digital Library under the terms of a non-exclusive deposit license

Material may also be shared elsewhere on Tufts websites, such as the Tisch Library website, or submitted to Canvas Commons if applicable.

Examples & details

Applicants may author an open text or make a significant authorship contribution to a jointly-authored text.

If the open textbook is not hosted elsewhere on a stable platform or repository, the text will be submitted to Tisch Library to be deposited in the open access Tufts Digital Library under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) license. Material is deposited in the Tufts Digital Library under the terms of a non-exclusive deposit license.
