Large-format printing

About Large-Format Printing at the DDS

Large-format printing is available by request from the Digital Design Studio (DDS) in Tisch Library. The DDS is an educational space for critically engaging with media, which includes being able to print posters and other student design projects. While the service is available to all members of the Tufts community, it is oriented towards academic conference posters and other medium- to large-format printing projects for students, and our service may not be the best-suited for other needs.

Spring 2021

To make a request, fill out our online form and attach your file(s). Allow for up to four business days for your file to be printed. We will email you when your print(s) is available for pick up. You can can pick up your posters from the circulation desk in the library lobby during library service hours, 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. every day (except holidays).

You may also be interested in using a third party like for inexpensive remote printing and mail delivery. Vistaprint offers 36''x48'' semi-glossy posters for ~$34 plus shipping, with delivery options from 4 to 12 days.

Policy update:

In order to minimize nonessential staff time in the DDS office while COVID-19 cases remain high, we will no longer accept most personal projects. For now, we will continue to print personal projects made by students using digital media software and student photography, which might benefit from an ink-based printer (as opposed to toner, which is cheaper and available elsewhere at Tufts). Should Tufts move into "orange" status, we will no longer print any personal projects.

For files downloaded from the internet, screenshots, and similar personal projects, you may be interested in Tufts Print/Copy Services, can send you files through campus mail and is likely cheaper for small-format prints by selecting Color Copy.

Our printer is suitable for posters, signage, photographs, and similar projects. It is not suitable for anything that needs large production runs (e.g. a dozen or more flyers, handouts, magazine covers, business cards, etc.) or anything double sided (e.g. magazines, brochures, booklets, programs, play bills, etc.).

For community members with such needs, or who need a regular client relationship with a print shop (e.g., if you need to email in files and pick up finished prints), we suggest alternate services: Tufts Print Copy Services can accept online orders for a wide range of printing needs, from brochures and business cards to large-format prints, and can send them to you via campus mail; the Advanced Production Lab at the SMFA has fine art printers that can print on a wider variety of papers up to 60''. There are also local non-Tufts vendors that may be able to meet your needs.

To print at the DDS, submit a request online. Please submit your files ready-to-print as PDFs, JPGs, or TIFFs. If you need assistance with exporting your file to one of these types, reach out to us via or through our virtual chat.

Our print management software will optimize space and minimize cost when printing multiple files—you do not need to consolidate multiple files into a single document. Our print management software can also easily resize files (note: scaling up images may result in pixelated prints). All prints are on 44'' wide paper; patrons may need to trim some excess white space after printing.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, please allow up to four days for printing. We will email you when your posters are available. You can can pick up your posters from the circulation desk in the lobby during library service hours, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day (except holidays).

If you are paying for yourself and you have a Tufts ID, please sign up to access your JumboCash account and add JumboCash online. Note: Jumbocash should be added to "all campus" dollers, not "printing" dollers.

If you do not have a Tufts ID, we have a guest JumboCash card you can load with a credit/debit card. Please reach out to for this. We cannot accept credit/debit directly or cash.

If a department is paying for your prints, we'll work with them to fill out an Interdepartmental Requisition (IDR). For the IDR we'll need an address, account number, and authorizing signature (see areas marked with red in example below). When you make your print request, you'll need to provide the email address of someone from the department who can authorize the payment. We'll email them a completed IDR to sign, which will then get sent to TTS.
